Bowman Heiden

Bowman Heiden is executive director of the Tusher Strategic Initiative for Technology Leadership and founding faculty director of the Open Innovation Labs at the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. He is also co-director of the Center for Intellectual Property at the University of Gothenburg.

Heiden’s work focuses on intellectual property, open innovation, technology strategy, entrepreneurship, and knowledge-based business. His research and teaching draw on economics, law, technology, and management to examine how intellectual assets can support innovation and economic development. He has managed more than 100 innovation projects involving companies, universities, health care organizations, and startups.

Heiden is also a director and board member of the Berkeley Policy Institute, co-founder and venture partner at the Berkeley Gateway Accelerator, and co-chair of the Technology, Innovation, and Intellectual Property program at New York University School of Law’s Classical Liberal Institute. He previously served as a member of the European Commission’s expert group on standard-essential patents and as a visiting scholar at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution.

Earlier, Heiden directed the Sahlgrenska School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Gothenburg and served as innovation director at Qatar Science & Technology Park. Before entering the field of innovation and technology management, he played professional basketball in Sweden and elsewhere in Europe, winning a Swedish national championship in 1999.

Heiden earned a Ph.D. and master’s in technology management and economics from Chalmers University of Technology and a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Bucknell University.
