Alexandre de Streel

Alexandre de Streel is a professor of European law at the University of Namur and academic director of the digital research program at the Centre on Regulation in Europe. He is also a visiting professor at the College of Europe and Sciences Po and a member of the decision-making body of the Belgian Competition Authority.
His research focuses on competition policy and regulation in the digital economy, including telecommunications, digital platforms, data, and artificial intelligence. He regularly advises European Union institutions and international organizations on digital regulation.
De Streel previously held visiting or research positions at New York University School of Law, the European University Institute, the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics, UCLouvain, and Paris-Panthéon-Assas University. He also served as chair of the European Commission’s expert group on the online-platform economy.
Earlier in his career, de Streel was a senior adviser on European Union affairs to Belgium’s deputy prime minister and minister for home affairs, an attaché at Belgium’s Permanent Representation to the European Union, and a policy adviser at the European Commission. He also served as an economic adviser to the Belgian Social and Economic Committee.
De Streel serves on scientific boards and committees at the European University Institute’s Centre for a Digital Society, the University of East Anglia’s Centre for Competition Policy, the Knight-Georgetown Institute, and the Mannheim Centre for Competition and Innovation.
De Streel earned a Ph.D. in law from the European University Institute. He also earned a master’s in law, summa cum laude, from the Université libre de Bruxelles and a master’s in economics, summa cum laude, from UCLouvain.
