Timothy Muris

Timothy J. Muris is George Mason University Foundation Professor of Law at George Mason’s Antonin Scalia Law School and a former chairman of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). He is also senior counsel at Sidley Austin LLP.

Muris chaired the FTC from June 2001 through August 2004, having previously served as director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection from 1981 to 1983, director of the Bureau of Competition from 1983 to 1985, and assistant to the director of the Office of Policy Planning and Evaluation from 1974 to 1976. He is the only person to serve as director of both of the FTC’s enforcement bureaus.

He has previously been of counsel with Collier, Shannon, Rill & Scott; Howrey Simon Arnold & White; O’Melveny & Myers; and Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Muris graduated with high honors from San Diego State University in 1971 and received his JD from UCLA in 1974.
