Herbert Hovenkamp

Herbert Hovenkamp is the James G. Dinan University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and the Wharton School. His primary areas of expertise include antitrust, competition policy, intellectual property, legal history, and law & economics.
He is widely regarded as one of the leading antitrust scholars and has authored or co-authored numerous influential books, including “Antitrust Law,” “Federal Antitrust Policy,” and “The Antitrust Enterprise.”
Previously, he held the Ben V. and Dorothy Willie Chair at the University of Iowa College of Law, where he taught for more than three decades. He also held additional academic roles, including appointments at University College London and The Ohio State University.
Before that, he was a professor of law at the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco, and earlier taught history and American studies at the University of Texas.
Hovenkamp is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Council of Learned Societies. He received the U.S. Department of Justice’s John Sherman Award for lifetime contributions to antitrust law, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award from Global Competition Review and multiple scholarly honors for his work.
He earned a bachelor’s from Calvin College, a master’s in American literature and a Ph.D. in American civilization from the University of Texas at Austin, and a J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law.
