Georgiana Mirza

Georgiana Mirza is a Ph.D. candidate in European Union law at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and a researcher at the Amsterdam Law & Technology Institute. Her research focuses on digital ecosystems, competition law, and market regulation, particularly the intersection of digital platforms, artificial intelligence, data protection, cybersecurity, and consumer protection.

Mirza is also affiliated with the university’s Kooijmans Institute and Boundaries of Law research program. Her doctoral research, conducted as part of the Empirical Legal Studies sector plan, examines how competition law and emerging digital regulations address the challenges posed by complex digital ecosystems.

Before entering academia in 2024, Mirza spent more than eight years at De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, most recently as a senior legal adviser specializing in competition law, data protection, and litigation. She advised clients on multijurisdictional merger control, foreign direct investment screening, foreign subsidies regulation, and cross-border competition and data protection disputes. Her work included major transactions involving digital platforms, financial services, health care, and private equity, including the €9 billion sale of eBay’s classifieds business to Adevinta.

In 2024, Mirza and two colleagues received Global Competition Review’s Litigation of the Year—Cartel Defence award for their work on a landmark UK Supreme Court ruling concerning the enforceability of litigation funding agreements.

Mirza earned her LL.M. in European Union law, summa cum laude, from Leiden University. She also holds an LL.M. in business law, an LL.B., and a master’s in entrepreneurial management from the West University of Timișoara, as well as a bachelor’s in economics from Babeș-Bolyai University.
