Big Ideas Workshop: Governing Together: Law, Economics, and the Commons after Ostrom
ICLE’s invitation-only Big Ideas Workshop series brings together early- and mid-career scholars to discuss important ideas in law & economics.
Presented by ICLE Academic Affiliates, Maria Macia and Christopher (CJ) Ryan, this workshop explored the enduring influence of Elinor Ostrom’s work on collective governance, institutional analysis, and property systems. Through a close reading of foundational texts and contemporary extensions, participants considered the implications of Ostrom’s legacy for property theory, IP law, and market regulation. The workshop bridged disciplines and sought to expand how legal scholars and economists think about governance, cooperation, and institutional design—and what that means for how we teach, research, and design systems of governance today.
This is ICLE’s fifth year of Big Ideas Workshops. Prior workshops have looked at topics including the foundational work of Armen Alchian and Ben Klein, the evolution of the understanding of the Theory of the Firm, and the debate over neoliberalism and race in America. These meetings are designed to be collaborative, informative, and fun.
