Big Ideas Workshop: Race and the Market: Neoliberalism’s Promises and Pitfalls

Sep 5, 2025   12:00pm ET   Virtual

ICLE’s invitation-only Big Ideas Workshop series brings together early- and mid-career scholars to discuss important ideas in law & economics.

Scholars have recently argued that neoliberalism is complicit in sustaining racial injustice by emphasizing free-market capitalism, deregulation, privatization, and individualism. They view these principles as inherently biased against certain groups and argue that they cannot be expected to cure systemic racism.

Presented by ICLE Academic Affiliates, Tammi S. Etheridge and Clara Piano, this workshop covered original sources cited by fans and critics of neoliberalism to consider definitions of neoliberalism, the neoliberal approach to race and discrimination, and the effects of policies intended to ameliorate past and current injustices.

This is ICLE’s fifth year of Big Ideas Workshops. Prior workshops have looked at topics including the foundational work of Armen Alchian and Ben Klein, the evolution of the understanding of the Theory of the Firm, and the enduring influence of Elinor Ostrom. These meetings are designed to be collaborative, informative, and fun.
