Professor Gus Hurwitz Joins ICLE as Director of Law & Economics Programs

PORTLAND, OR — The International Center for Law & Economics (ICLE) is pleased to announce that Justin (Gus) Hurwitz, assistant professor of law and co-director of the Space, Cyber, and Telecom Law program at the University of Nebraska College of Law, has joined with ICLE to be its Director of Law & Economics Programs.

Professor Hurwitz has long been an ICLE academic affiliate and has collaborated with ICLE on numerous projects. As Director of Law & Economics Programs, Hurwitz will take on a much larger role, however, helping to shape ICLE’s programming and research agenda.

In his new role Professor Hurwitz will help ICLE to support and expand the influence of New Institutional Economics and Law and Economics in the academy and in policymaking, particularly among new and aspiring legal scholars. He will also help to guide ICLE’s antitrust and consumer protection, data security and privacy, and telecommunications scholarship and research activities.

Professor Hurwitz’s scholarship builds on his background in law, technology, and economics to consider the interface between law and technology and the role of regulation in high-tech industries. He has a particular expertise in telecommunications law and technology, including data- and cybersecurity. His work has been used by administrative agencies, cited in judicial opinions, referenced by federal legislators, and appeared in various law journals and other publications.

Hurwitz received his JD from the University of Chicago Law School, where he received Olin and MVP2 law and economics scholarships, and holds an MA in Economics from George Mason University and a BA from St. John’s College. Prior to law school, Professor Hurwitz held undergraduate and graduate research positions at Los Alamos National Lab and interned at the Naval Research Lab. Most important, while at Los Alamos he was part of a team that held the Internet2 Land Speed World Record with the Guinness Book of World Records.
