The average internet speed in the US may still be around 300 Mbps, but multi-gig plans have seen a dramatic rise in the last 5–7 years. According to the International Center for Law & Economics, the number of households having 1 Gbps broadband speeds or faster went from only around 3% in 2019 to 33% in 2023. The infrastructure needed to expose more and more households to broadband plans ranging from 2 Gbps to 10 Gbps has grown significantly in the last five or so years. This means that your motherboard’s Ethernet port has climbed the priority list when you’re shopping for PC hardware.
