Alex Tabarrok

Alexander T. Tabarrok is the Bartley J. Madden Chair in Economics at the Mercatus Center and a professor of economics at George Mason University.

His research focuses on law & economics, voting theory and political institutions, health economics, and market design, including dominant-assurance contracts and institutional incentives.

In addition to his academic posts, Tabarrok serves as an adviser to the Indian School of Public Policy, director of the Center for the Study of Public Choice at George Mason University, and a senior fellow of the Independent Institute. He also co-founded Marginal Revolution University, an online economics-education platform, and co-authors the textbook “Modern Principles of Economics” with Tyler Cowen.

Earlier in his career, he served as a vice president and later director of research at the Independent Institute, and an assistant editor of The Independent Review. He previously held a visiting professorship at the University of Virginia, served as an assistant professor of economics at Ball State University, and began his academic career as a lecturer in economics at the University of Virginia.

He earned a Ph.D. from George Mason University and a bachelor’s from the University of Victoria.
