Chris Mufarrige

Christopher Mufarrige is director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). His work focuses on consumer protection, financial regulation, and the application of law & economics to financial-services policy.
Prior to becoming director, Mufarrige served as chief of staff and attorney adviser to FTC Commissioner Melissa Holyoak. In that role, he advised on enforcement and regulatory matters across the commission’s competition and consumer-protection portfolio.
Earlier, he served as assistant general counsel and director at Marqeta, where he led legal work on regulatory compliance and product development. He previously worked at Marqeta as senior regulatory and product counsel.
Mufarrige also served as senior counsel at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Before that, he was an associate at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.
Earlier in his career, he served in the first Trump administration as senior adviser to the director and deputy director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, advising on enforcement, rulemaking, and supervisory examinations involving the nation’s largest banks and nonbank financial institutions. He previously worked as an attorney adviser at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
He also served in the Executive Office of the President’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, where he worked on regulatory review and cost-benefit analysis. Earlier, he served as an attorney adviser at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, focusing on cost-benefit analysis, economic analysis, and financial-regulatory policy.
In addition to his government and private-sector work, Mufarrige has taught a course on financial services and consumer protection at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School.
He holds a J.D. from George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School, a master’s in economics from George Mason University, and a bachelor’s from Texas Christian University.
